The short guide

How to tell a joke well

Know the ending first. Most jokes fail before the punchline, when the teller forgets a detail or rushes. Read it twice, and say the last line out loud once before you try it on anyone.

Keep the setup short. Every extra word is something your listener has to hold onto. Cut names, places and backstory unless the punchline needs them.

Pause before the payoff. A beat of silence tells people something is coming. It will feel long to you and just right to them.

Then stop talking. Don't explain it and don't repeat it. If it didn't land, smile and move on. There are plenty more where that came from.
